I want to begin by giving you a back story on what led me to pray perhaps the most powerful prayer I have ever prayed. Without recanting my entire life’s history, for now, I will focus on when I was about 40 years old. I remember this day as if it were yesterday.
My life was in a downward spiral, well, more like a full-on descent and crash. I had just ended my second marriage the year before. My health was fading to the point of a career change being necessary. I was a single dad raising my 13-year-old son, and we were running out of options and money quickly. My health was getting worse every day it seemed, and the doctors didn’t seem too interested in finding out why for someone with no health insurance.
Migraines were now crushing me every other day, and I could barely function. I felt as if I were dying. I was afraid, not of dying but of leaving my son without a father. My new career path in sales was off to a terrible start as I was trying to transition from being an auto mechanic to real estate sales. (I wasn’t much of a people person either) This is all the while battling sickness and migraines. Ughhh.
When I Got The News
Then it happened. A doctor told me that my blood work showed liver disease and failure. I was devastated! I remember driving back from her office in Tampa to Lakeland on Interstate 4 during the construction period around the east Tampa area. I was driving alone in bumper-to-bumper traffic next to a tall wall of dirt, rebar, and concrete as they prepared for a new exit ramp. Traffic surrounded me as usual on Interstate 4, and I was barely moving when the pressure of everything running through my mind overwhelmed me, and I broke down and began to cry out, “I can’t take this anymore, ” as I beat on my steering wheel.
I truly believed that my life was coming to an end. At that moment, I cried out at the top of my lungs a simple prayer that changed my life forever. That prayer was “God, I Need You.” That simple prayer was all I knew to pray at that time of desperation. I didn’t know what else to say. It wasn’t some long prayer full of “church speak”; it was a simple man crying out to God for help. Then something truly amazing happened!
Something Just Happened
That simple prayer changed my life forever, as I was about to discover. I didn’t realize the enormous impact that it would have until much later on, but what I do know now is that at that moment, God heard my cry. After I cried out to Him, sitting there in traffic, something did happen almost immediately, though. This great sense of peace came over me that I had never experienced before. The problems were still there, my life was still a wreck, but this feeling of peace made me feel as if everything was going to be okay. It gave me the strength to press on.
I’ll discuss this transformational prayer and how a miracle from God changed my life in more detail in future posts. But for now, I wanted to share this experience with you so you can experience it. I feel that there is someone out there who needs to hear this right now. There is a God, and He cares about you. He hears your cries, knows your fears, and knows your voice.
You don’t need some fancy prayer; just talk to Him. Cry out, and let Him give you the peace you need to walk through whatever you’re walking through. He will help guide you, so be still and listen for His voice. You are important to Him, no matter what. I was not a “good” person most of my life, but He loved me anyway, and He’s waiting for you to call out. Let today be that day.

A Simple Prayer: God, I need you. I need your peace in my life. Please help me to hear your voice and see your goodness in my life every day. I don’t want to go another day without you. Please guide me in the direction you would have me go, and grant me your wisdom to make the right decisions. I choose to trust you. Amen
